Windows voice typing shortcut and how to get cleaner text
Windows has voice typing built in at no extra cost, and one shortcut opens it anywhere you can type. This guide covers the Win+H shortcut, the settings worth changing, the punctuation commands, and how to get text you do not have to retype.
Open voice typing with Win+H
- 01 Click into any text field: Word, Outlook, a browser, Notepad, Teams.
- 02 Press the Windows logo key and H at the same time.
- 03 A small voice typing bar appears with a microphone button. It starts listening right away on most setups.
- 04 Speak at a normal pace.
- 05 Press Win+H again, click the microphone, or say "stop listening" to stop.
If nothing happens, check that the cursor is in a text field. Voice typing needs a place to put the text.
If the shortcut does not work
- Open Settings, Privacy and security, Microphone, and make sure microphone access is on for Windows and for the app you are typing in.
- Check Settings, System, Sound, Input and pick the right microphone.
- Make sure your display language or a supported voice typing language is set in Settings, Time and language.
- Restart the app you are typing in. Some older apps need a fresh start after a permission change.
Settings worth changing
Click the gear icon on the voice typing bar. The options vary a little between Windows versions, but these are the useful ones.
- Voice typing launcher. Shows the microphone automatically when you click into a text field with the touch keyboard. Handy on tablets, optional on a desktop.
- Auto punctuation. Lets Windows add periods, commas and question marks for you. Turn it on, then correct it with spoken commands where needed.
- Microphone. Choose your headset here if Windows keeps picking the webcam microphone.
- Language. Switch the voice typing language if you dictate in more than one.
Punctuation and editing commands
Even with auto punctuation on, spoken commands give you control. Say them as their own short phrase.
- "period", "comma", "question mark", "exclamation point"
- "colon", "semicolon", "open quote", "close quote"
- "new line" and "new paragraph"
- "delete that" removes the last thing you said
- "select that" selects it so you can retype or format it
- "stop listening" ends the session
You do not need all of these. Learn "new paragraph", "delete that" and "stop listening" first.
Tips for better Windows voice typing
- Use a headset. Laptop microphones pick up the fan and keyboard, and that causes most misheard words.
- Speak in full sentences. Recognition uses context, so whole thoughts come out more accurately than single words.
- Leave a short pause before punctuation commands.
- Finish the thought before correcting. Stopping mid sentence produces broken fragments.
- Keep the voice typing bar visible. If focus jumps to another window, the text may land somewhere unexpected.
- Watch the time. Voice typing stops after a stretch of silence, so restart it with Win+H when you come back.
Why you still edit afterwards
Windows voice typing is accurate at the word level. The trouble is that people do not speak in finished sentences.
- Fillers such as "um", "so" and "you know" stay in.
- When you correct yourself, both versions end up on the page.
- There is no style. A chat reply and a formal email come out the same way.
- Names and jargon are misheard again and again, with no personal dictionary.
- Lists and structure only appear if you dictate every break.
For short notes this is fine. For emails, tickets and documents, you dictate quickly and then spend minutes fixing.
Cleaner text on Windows with VoiceTyping
VoiceTyping is an AI dictation service that runs in your browser and as an installed web app, plus an extension for Chrome and Edge.
- Extension in Edge or Chrome. Adds a microphone button and a hotkey to every text field on the web: Outlook on the web, Gmail, Teams in the browser, Slack, Notion, Google Docs, your CRM. Hold the hotkey, talk, release, and the cleaned text is inserted at your cursor.
- Installed web app. Open voicetyping.ai/app in Edge or Chrome and install it from the browser menu. It gets its own window and a spot on your Start menu and taskbar. Dictate, then copy the result into Word or any desktop app with one click.
VoiceTyping is not a native Windows program and has no system-wide hotkey outside the browser. For desktop apps you copy from the web app. For everything in the browser, it types straight into the field.
| What you said | What VoiceTyping typed |
|---|---|
| uh hi Tom so I checked the invoice and the the total is wrong it should be 1200 no 1250 | Hi Tom, I checked the invoice and the total is wrong. It should be 1,250. |
| ok so next steps um call the vendor then update the sheet then send it to Anna | Next steps: 1. Call the vendor. 2. Update the sheet. 3. Send it to Anna. |
What changes compared with Win+H
- Fillers, repetitions and false starts are removed.
- Only your final correction stays.
- Punctuation, capitals, paragraphs and lists are added without spoken commands.
- Styles for Email, Chat, Document and Notes, picked by the site you are on.
- A personal dictionary keeps names and jargon right.
- Voice commands such as "make it shorter", "more formal" and "translate to Spanish" reshape the last result.

Common Win+H problems and fixes
- The bar opens but types nothing. Check the microphone level in Settings, System, Sound, Input and speak a little closer.
- Wrong language. Change it from the gear icon on the voice typing bar.
- Text lands in the wrong place. Click into the field again and restart with Win+H.
- It stops after a few seconds. Silence ends the session. Start talking right after the bar opens.
Most of these come down to the wrong microphone or a lost cursor, so check those two first.
