Voice to text iPhone dictation that comes out clean
Talk into your iPhone and get text with punctuation, paragraphs and the right tone, without the ums. Add VoiceTyping to your Home Screen from Safari, dictate in it, and copy or share the cleaned text into Messages, Mail, Slack, WhatsApp, Notes or any other app with one tap.
How VoiceTyping works on your iPhone
VoiceTyping is a web app you install from Safari. It is not a keyboard and not an App Store app, and we say that up front so you know what to expect.
- You open VoiceTyping from its icon on your Home Screen. It opens full screen, like any other app.
- You hold the mic button and talk, or tap once to start and once to stop for longer messages.
- The cleaned text appears in a second. Tap Copy, or tap Share to send it straight to Messages, Mail, Slack or any app in the share sheet.
- Your styles, dictionary, snippets and history are the same as on your computer, because it is one account.
The one extra step compared with the built-in keyboard mic is switching to VoiceTyping and back. In return you get text you do not have to fix.
Set up VoiceTyping on iPhone
- Create your account and open voicetyping.ai/app in Safari.
- Tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen, then Add.
- Open VoiceTyping from the new icon and allow the microphone when asked.
- Pick a default style. Chat suits texts and Slack, Email suits longer replies.
- Add the names you text most to your dictionary, so "Siobhan" or "Nguyen" comes out right.
- Set up a few snippets, like your address or your calendar link, and say them instead of typing.
VoiceTyping compared with iPhone keyboard dictation
The mic on the iPhone keyboard is built in, costs nothing extra and types right where you are. It adds some punctuation on its own and works well for a quick text. For longer messages, it types fillers and restarts as spoken, you clean up by hand, and every message comes out in the same tone.
| iPhone keyboard dictation | VoiceTyping | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Included with iOS | From 7 USD per month billed yearly |
| Where you dictate | Right in any app's text field | In the VoiceTyping app, then copy or share in one tap |
| Fillers and false starts | Kept in the text | Removed |
| Punctuation and paragraphs | Some automatic punctuation | Punctuation, paragraphs and lists added for you |
| Self-corrections ("at 3, no, at 4") | Both versions typed | Only the final version |
| Tone | One output | Email, Chat, Document, Notes and custom styles |
| Your names | Learns slowly, no list you edit | Personal dictionary and snippets |
| Same setup on your computer | No | Yes, one account across phone and computer |
For "on my way", the keyboard mic is enough. For a client reply from the train, a follow-up after a meeting or a long message you would rather not retype, VoiceTyping is the better tool.
Shortcuts on your phone and computer
On iPhone you hold the big mic button to talk and release to finish, or tap to toggle. Copying your last result again is one tap in History. On your computer, the extension for Chrome and Edge and the installed web app use keyboard shortcuts, with defaults you can change.
| Action | Windows and Linux | Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Hold to talk | Alt + Shift + Space | Option + Shift + Space |
| Toggle recording | Alt + Shift + D | Option + Shift + D |
| Insert last result again | Alt + Shift + V | Option + Shift + V |
| Undo last insert | Alt + Shift + Z | Option + Shift + Z |
What people dictate on their iPhone

- Notes right after a client call, turned into clear paragraphs or a list.
- Long texts to family or friends without autocorrect chaos.
- Messages in Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Polish, Dutch and more, with automatic language detection.
