Dragon dictation software cost and price for every edition

Dragon dictation software costs about 699 USD as a one time license for Dragon Professional v16 on Windows, and Dragon Legal sits higher at about 799 USD. The cloud and medical editions are subscriptions sold through resellers, from about 55 USD per user per month. Nuance no longer sells a low cost home edition, so the cheapest way into Dragon today is several hundred dollars.

What each Dragon edition costs

Nuance, now part of Microsoft, lists most editions with a contact form rather than a public price, so the numbers below are the typical prices shown by authorized resellers and US software stores at the time of writing. Check the vendor or your reseller before you buy.

There is no current Dragon for Mac. Nuance stopped Dragon Professional Individual for Mac in 2018, so Mac users who want Dragon run it on Windows in a virtual machine or pick another tool.

What you get for the money

Dragon Professional is a deep product. For the one time price you get a voice profile that learns how you speak, custom vocabularies, voice macros, and full control of a Windows desktop by voice, including menus, windows and programs like Word and Outlook. It also works offline, which matters if you dictate on a plane or in a building with poor connectivity.

What the price does not include is easy to miss. A one time license covers that version. When Windows or Office changes enough that an old version struggles, the next upgrade is another purchase. Training and setup take time, and many buyers add a good USB headset, which runs 80 to 200 USD. Firms buying Dragon Legal for drafting usually budget separately for their AI legal research tool, since dictation only covers the writing side of the work.

The real cost over three years

A one time price looks simple, but most people compare it with a subscription, so it helps to put both on the same timeline.

For a single writer on Windows who will use the same version for many years, Dragon Professional can be good value. For anyone on a Mac, a phone or more than one computer, or anyone who mostly writes email and documents in the browser, a subscription costs far less over three years. Is Dragon worth the price in 2026

Dragon is worth the price if you need three things together: dictation inside desktop programs, offline use, and voice control of Windows itself. Medical and legal teams with years of macros and custom vocabularies are the clearest case. For them the switching cost is real and the license pays back.

It is harder to justify if most of your writing is email, chat, notes and documents in a browser. Dragon types what you say, word for word, and you speak punctuation as commands like "comma" and "period". Newer AI dictation tools take natural speech, remove the "um" and "uh", apply your self-corrections and add the punctuation on their own. That cuts the editing pass that made dictation slow in the first place.

Cheaper options that cover most of the job

  • VoiceTyping. AI cleanup, automatic punctuation and styles for email, chat and documents, in the browser, as an installed web app on Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android, and as an extension for Chrome and Edge. 7 USD per month billed yearly on Personal. It does not control desktop programs and it needs an internet connection.
  • Built in dictation. Windows voice typing and Apple Dictation come with the operating system. They work for short messages, but you speak your punctuation on Windows and neither removes fillers or false starts.
  • Wispr Flow. A native desktop and phone app with a system wide hotkey and AI cleanup, at about 15 USD per month for Pro. We compare it in detail on our Wispr Flow alternative page.

How much does Dragon dictation software cost?

Dragon Professional v16 costs about 699 USD as a one time Windows license, and Dragon Legal v16 about 799 USD. Dragon Professional Anywhere is a subscription at about 55 USD per user per month through resellers. Dragon Medical One is quoted per user, commonly 79 to 99 USD per month on a term contract.

Is there a monthly subscription for Dragon?

Yes, for the cloud editions. Dragon Professional Anywhere and Dragon Medical One are sold as per user subscriptions through authorized resellers. Dragon Professional v16 and Dragon Legal v16 are one time licenses. The mobile Dragon Anywhere app was 14.99 USD per month, and several sources report new sales ended in 2026.

Is there a cheaper version of Dragon?

Not anymore. Dragon Home, the roughly 150 USD entry edition, was discontinued, so Dragon Professional at about 699 USD is now the lowest priced desktop edition. If you mainly write email and documents, an AI dictation subscription such as VoiceTyping Personal at 84 USD per year covers that job for much less.

Does Dragon work on a Mac?

No. Nuance discontinued Dragon for Mac in 2018 and has not released a replacement. Mac users either run the Windows version in a virtual machine, use Apple Dictation, or choose a browser based tool such as VoiceTyping, which runs on macOS in the browser or as an installed web app.

Is Dragon still worth buying?

Dragon is still worth buying if you need offline dictation, voice control of Windows programs, or a medical or legal vocabulary with macros you have built over years. If your work is mostly writing in the browser, AI dictation tools cost less over three years and need far less editing.
